the site

Now in its thirteenth year as a work site & exhibition space for environmental artists, THE LAND’s forty-acre Manzano Mountain site continues to be a 9-copyunique resource: a wall-less laboratory devoted exclusively to temporary, site-specific, environmentally low-impact, land-based art. Through its residency program THE LAND provides opportunities for artists to work intimately with, rather than merely on, the land, in effect to engage the land as a collaborator. Although applicants submit a project proposal, many artists come away from their residencies surprised by how their initial ideas have grown & changed. The site’s rich natural history & remote location, & the commitment of time a residency demands, foster a heightened attentiveness & make possible an open, measured, contemplative daily working practice that can lead to works of exceptional insight.
